The Little Animal's Home 🏠

A little bunny lives in the forest and needs a safe home to hide from the big bad wolf. If the bunny's home has two doors, when the wolf blocks one, the bunny can escape through the other — this home is safe!

But if the bunny's home has only one door, the wolf blocks it and the bunny has nowhere to go — this home is dangerous!

For kids: In Go, stones are like little animals and their homes are "eyes." A home with two true eyes = alive (safe forever); a home with only one true eye = dead (will be captured eventually)!

Life and Death Concepts

Judging whether a group is alive or dead is one of the most essential skills in Go.

  • Alive = A group with two or more true eyes. The opponent can never capture it, because they can only fill one eye at a time, and the other eye remains open.
  • Dead = A group that is surrounded and cannot make two true eyes, nor form a "seki" (dual life). It will eventually be captured.
Core Mantra: Two true eyes = alive, one true eye = dead!

Why Are Two Eyes Unkillable?

This is one of the most magical rules in Go. Imagine:

  • The big bad wolf (White) wants to catch the bunny (Black)
  • The bunny has two holes (two true eyes)
  • The wolf can only block one hole at a time
  • The bunny escapes through the other hole!

No matter how hard the wolf tries, it can never block both holes at once. So a group with two true eyes lives forever!

Key Point: Both eyes must be true eyes (solidly connected, no gaps). If one eye is false, the bad guy can sneak in through the gap!

Example of a Living Group

The Black group below has two true eyes, so it is alive. White can never capture it.

Alive ✓

This group has two independent eyes (the two empty points in the middle), and all Black stones are connected. No matter how White plays, both eyes cannot be filled at once.

Example of a Dead Group

The Black group below has only one true eye, so it is dead. White can eventually capture it.

Dead ✗

This group has only one eye in the center. White can slowly reduce the outside liberties and finally fill the only eye, capturing the entire group.

How to Make Two Eyes?

Since two true eyes make a group live forever, we need to learn how to live — making two true eyes within our own stones.

  • Step 1: Make the first true eye (surround an empty point with your connected stones)
  • Step 2: Make a second true eye nearby (the two eyes must be separated by your stones — they cannot connect)

The stones between the two eyes act like a wall, separating them. This way the opponent can never occupy both eyes at once.

Making Life Mantra: Make one eye first, then make a second. Two eyes must be separate, with stones in between!

Quiz 1: Alive or Dead?

Look at the two Black groups below. Is each alive or dead?

Left

Dead ✗ — Only one eye (the center empty point), so it is dead
Right

Dead ✗ — It looks like two eyes, but both are false eyes! The white wall sits tight against the eye points (top and bottom white stones press into the empty spaces). White can play into the top space first to destroy one eye, then capture the entire group. This is the "fake two eyes" trap

Quiz 2: Alive or Dead?

Look at the two Black groups below. Is each alive or dead?

Left
Click to reveal answer
Alive ✓ — Black has two independent true eyes (left and right empty points). Any White stone placed in either eye is suicide (all four neighbors are black), so the group cannot be captured. Alive
Right

Dead ✗ — Black has only one true eye (the empty point on the left). By the "one eye is dead" theorem, this group will eventually be captured if surrounded

Practice Making Two Eyes

Now that you know how to tell alive from dead groups, try making a two-eyed living group on the board! Remember the mantra:

Two true eyes = alive, one true eye = dead!

You can also open the Tactics Training on the homepage to practice making eyes interactively.
